Igor Thiago struck twice late on as Brentford beat Newcastle United
This deepened the visitors’ troubles away from home.

Harvey Barnes had put Newcastle ahead in the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium, drilling a low shot through Caoimhin Kelleher’s legs from inside the box.
Brentford responded strongly after the interval and levelled when Kevin Schade headed in, capitalising after Sven Botman could only glance Michael Kayode’s long throw into his path.
The hosts continued to press and were rewarded when Dan Burn brought down Dango Ouattara in the area. Referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot, and Burn, who had escaped punishment for a similar challenge moments earlier, was shown a second yellow card and dismissed.
Aaron Ramsdale, making his first Premier League appearance for Newcastle after Nick Pope went off injured, was unable to keep out Thiago’s penalty as the forward calmly sent him the wrong way.
Thiago then sealed victory in stoppage time, latching onto a misplaced pass from Malick Thiaw before slotting past Ramsdale for his second of the afternoon.
Best fan reaction
David: We're really turning the Gtech into a fortress. Even after going a goal down, we kept our shape and Andrew stuck to his plan. A strong, professional performance all round. The substitutes helped see the game out and it’s always satisfying to go into the international break on a high.
Sarah: A well-organised win from the Bees. We were superior to Newcastle in almost every area, and the final scoreline showed it. The front three looked sharp, and we were mostly solid at the back.
Peter: Brentford keep proving the pundits wrong. Igor Thiago was outstanding, as was Jordan Henderson. His experience and influence are spreading throughout the side and making a real difference. Six home matches, four wins and a draw, with the only defeat coming against Manchester City. Credit to Keith Andrews and the team.
Marcus: A real game of two halves. We looked shaky in the first against a physical Newcastle side but dominated after the break. Kayode, Ouattara and Thiago were excellent, though everyone played their part in another impressive result.
Phil: A heartening performance. We didn’t let our heads drop after conceding early. There was real passion and commitment throughout, and Thiago is in brilliant form.
