Watkins’ deflected strike early in the second half sealed a 1-0 win, lifting Unai Emery’s side to seventh in the table and within two points of fourth-placed Manchester City, albeit having played a game more.

In a match short on clear-cut chances, Watkins sparked the contest into life after 49 minutes. Latching onto Jacob Ramsey’s through ball, the England striker cut inside and drilled a low shot that clipped Nathan Collins before creeping past Mark Flekken.

Watkins thought he had turned provider moments later, squaring for Morgan Rogers to find the net, but a VAR check ruled the Villa forward marginally offside.

Brentford almost snatched an equaliser when Keane Lewis-Potter struck the foot of the post, but Villa’s backline, marshalled superbly by on-loan Chelsea defender Axel Disasi, held firm.

The win not only boosts Villa’s hopes of a top-four finish but also completes their first league double over Brentford since 1947. Meanwhile, Thomas Frank’s side slip from 11th to 12th in the table.

Brentford fan reaction

Two key talking points emerged as Brentford fans trudged away from the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday following yet another home defeat.

Despite a spirited second-half performance against Aston Villa, the Bees fell short once again. That has been a recurring theme this season, particularly against top-half sides.

Paul, another Brentford fan, added: "Although Brentford have dominated possession in these games, we've struggled to carve out clear-cut chances. Time and again, crosses have been pumped into the box, only to be comfortably dealt with by the opposition's defence."
