Football: Walsall 1 - 1 AFC Wimbledon
Late free-kick denies Wimbledon victory
There was little to separate Wimbledon and Walsall as two promotion hopefuls went head-to-head on Saturday.

Omar Bugiel’s well-taken strike put Wimbledon in front, but a late free-kick denied them all three points, leaving them frustrated after a match in which they more than held their own against the league leaders.
At the time of writing, just nine points separate first place from seventh, highlighting how finely poised the promotion race is as the season reaches its climax.

Chances were at a premium in a cagey first half, though Wimbledon came closest when Alistair Smith slipped in Marcus Browne, only for Walsall goalkeeper Sam Hornby to make a sharp, sprawling save.
After the break, Browne spurned a golden opportunity by side-footing wide, before Walsall responded with Charlie Lakin’s downward header, well kept out by Owen Goodman.

Wimbledon eventually made the breakthrough on 70 minutes. Substitute Bugiel reacted quickest to bury a crisp follow-up from 18 yards after Hornby had initially denied Smith.
Hornby then produced another smart stop to keep out Smith’s long-range effort, and with just three minutes left, Isaac Hutchinson stepped up to curl a free-kick into the bottom corner and rescue a point for Walsall.

Ryan Thompson, a huge AFC Wimbledon fan, told us: "The players have come a long way and with seven games to go, they're fighting it out at the top end of the table. This is why everyone wanted to be at this point of the season."
Another Wimbledon fan added: " I suspect we’ll have to win at Swindon on Tuesday if we want to maintain our chance of automatic promotion."
We also managed to catch up with a Walsall fan after the match who told us: "AFC Wimbledon are a proper football club! Hopefully, Walsall and Wimbledon finish 1st and 2nd this season and we'll meet again in League One this season."
