The Addicks hit the front with their very first meaningful attack after just 14 minutes. Campbell was afforded too much space down the left, cutting inside before driving a low shot beyond goalkeeper Jack Stevens.
The Charlton forward nearly doubled his tally in similar fashion just 12 minutes later, but this time Stevens was equal to the effort, getting down smartly to make a strong save.
Moments later, Campbell was involved again, slipping the ball to Matty Godden, whose strike rattled the far post with Stevens well beaten.

Cambridge, looking to pull themselves away from the relegation zone, were fortunate not to fall further behind before half-time. They nearly levelled matters themselves when defender Josh Edwards came close to heading James Brophy’s cross into his own net.
The second half was short on quality, but the hosts had a golden chance to salvage a point late on. With four minutes left, Edwards surged forward and fired just wide from the edge of the area.
In stoppage time, Cambridge pushed again. Tom McIntyre produced a crucial block to deny Kell Watts, before substitute Dominic Ballard blazed the rebound over the bar – a last-gasp opportunity that summed up Cambridge’s evening.
What this result means for both sides
Charlton’s victory lifts them further clear of the relegation scrap, while Cambridge United remain in a precarious position near the foot of the League One table.
