The Blues triggered a release clause in Delap’s contract, activated following Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League. It is understood Chelsea will pay £20m up front, while Ipswich have secured a sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Enzo Maresca’s side beat off interest from Manchester United, Newcastle and Everton to secure the signature of the England Under-21 international.
A closer look at Delap's career so far.

The 22-year-old, son of former Republic of Ireland midfielder Rory Delap, began his youth career at Derby County before moving to Manchester City’s academy.
He made six senior appearances for City, scoring once in the League Cup, before a series of loan spells (including one at Stoke City pictured above) and a permanent move to Portman Road.
Will Delap improve the team at Stamford Bridge?
Chelsea, winners of this season’s Uefa Conference League, have qualified for the Champions League and Delap could now add to his sole appearance in the competition, made for City in 2022.
He is currently part of England’s provisional squad for the European Under-21 Championship in Slovenia, though his participation is now in doubt. Chelsea are due to take part in the Fifa Club World Cup, held in the United States from 14 June to 13 July, with the extended tournament expected to take precedence.

Despite finishing fourth in the Premier League, Chelsea lacked consistent firepower from a traditional striker. Cole Palmer was the club’s top scorer with 15 league goals, while Nicolas Jackson netted 10 in 30 appearances. Christopher Nkunku scored three times in 27 outings, and 18-year-old Marc Guiu failed to register in his three senior matches.
