For thousands of students across the UK. it is a moment of clarity, change or confirmation. Some will see their plans fall neatly into place, while others will need to take a different route. For many, that means Clearing.
Last year, a record 67,990 students found a university place through Clearing. If you are unsure what time to log in, how the process works or what you can do to improve your chances, this guide is here to help.
Key information if Clearing is your next step
When should you be ready for Clearing?
As we have already said Clearing officially opens at 8am on Thursday 14 August 2025, but you should aim to be ready well before that.
Your UCAS Hub will update early in the morning to reflect your application status. If you have not met the conditions of your firm or insurance offer, or if you are not holding any offers, you will receive a message confirming you are eligible for Clearing.

Why log in before 8am?
It is recommended to be logged into your UCAS Hub by 7:30am. Here is why:
- UCAS systems can become busy, so logging in early helps avoid delays
- Universities open their Clearing phone lines at 8am and places are often allocated on a first-come, first-served basis
- A little preparation before the rush gives you a valuable advantage
Being informed and ready can make all the difference. Clearing is not just a backup plan. For many, it is the start of something better suited, more exciting and full of potential.
Is Clearing only for those without any offers?
Not at all. While Clearing is commonly associated with students who did not receive any offers, it is also used by many who already hold qualifications and simply want a different path.

Some students use Clearing to switch to a course that better aligns with their interests, a university in a preferred location, or an institution with stronger career opportunities. Others may hold an existing offer but choose to self-release into Clearing after reconsidering their options.
Ultimately, Clearing is about choice. It allows you to take control of your next steps and find a course and university that truly suit your goals.
