The sides managed only three shots on target between them.

The best of those fell to Anis Mehmeti, whose fierce second-half strike cannoned off the woodwork. The midfielder had looked the most likely to break the deadlock, going close early on after surging through Charlton’s back line before being denied by a well-timed Kayne Ramsay challenge.

City, buoyed by a lively crowd, dominated possession and created the more dangerous moments before the interval, but neither side was able to test the goalkeepers.

Charlton grew into the contest after the break, Rob Apter forcing Radek Vítek into a low save before Mehmeti struck the post at the other end. The Robins’ goalkeeper was called into action again soon after, pushing George Tanner’s attempted clearance onto the woodwork to spare his teammate.

As seven minutes of added time were played, Vítek ensured the points were shared, smothering a late chance from Charlton’s summer signing Harvey Knibbs.

Both clubs had begun their Championship campaigns with opening-day victories. Charlton will have been the happiest of the two sides and they'll be looking to keep their unbeaten run going over the next few weeks.

Brief immediate reaction

Ben, a Charlton fan who was in the away end, said: "It wasn't a particularly great football match but it was a decent draw in the end. Ultimately, a point away in the Championship can never be considered a bad result."
