Marc Guiu, 19, opened the scoring and briefly held the record as Chelsea’s youngest scorer in the competition, only for Estevao Willian, 18, to surpass him later in the half with a well-taken penalty.

The first half was chaotic, featuring three spot-kicks: two for Chelsea and one for Ajax. This was in addition to a long-range strike from Moises Caicedo. Tyrique George, introduced at half-time, added the fifth just minutes after coming on, while 17-year-old Reggie Walsh made his debut, becoming the youngest Chelsea player to feature in the tournament.

Best reaction from Chelsea fans

Marcus: Impressive display, even if it came against modest opposition. Jamie Gittens looked a clear upgrade on Alejandro Garnacho, but Filip Jorgensen remains a concern. A more reliable goalkeeper and greater defensive experience are needed, though in attack Chelsea look like genuine contenders.

Leo: Great to see so many young players given a chance, and the goal difference is a bonus, but the scoreline flattered Chelsea. The number of changes was obvious and the defence still feels fragile. Wesley Fofana looks far from his best and Jorgensen should have done better with the one real test he faced. Still, a 5-1 win is nothing to complain about. COYB!

Pete: Caicedo was superb again. Feels like he's moved up a level since last season.

Hannah: A very strong performance from an incredibly young Chelsea side. That said, Ajax were among the weakest teams I’ve seen in the Champions League for some time. Their fans will be devastated.

Elliot: Outstanding display from a heavily rotated Chelsea team, who looked comfortable throughout and would likely have won even if Ajax had finished with 11 men. Estevao was an absolute delight to watch.

Louis: Estevao is only 18 yet already showing immense talent. He’s the most exciting attacking prospect to emerge at Chelsea since Eden Hazard, and his potential seems boundless.

Ben: I’ll admit I was sceptical when I saw the amount of changes to the line-up, but this is the kind of Chelsea performance that had been waiting to happen. Estevao is a sensational young player, and it’s thrilling to think how good this team could become.
