The two clubs met in last season’s semi-finals, when Arsenal advanced 5-3 on aggregate after both sides claimed away victories.

How the action unfolded

Determined to reverse that pattern, Arsenal made a bright start and struck with their first real attack in the seventh minute. Beth Mead battled through a challenge on the edge of the box and cleverly slipped the ball to Alessia Russo, who finished calmly across Christiane Endler.

But Lyon soon took control, with Dumornay turning the game on its head inside five minutes after profiting from two errors in Arsenal’s backline.

First, goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar’s misplaced short pass gifted possession to the Haiti international. Although her initial effort was parried, Dumornay reacted quickest to slot home the rebound.

Moments later, Arsenal failed to clear their lines, and the ball fell kindly for the midfielder on the edge of the area. She unleashed a fierce left-footed strike high into the net, leaving Van Domselaar with no chance.

Despite Arsenal’s efforts to find an equaliser, they were unable to break through Lyon’s defence and extended their winless run to four matches.

Gunners falter despite Slegers’ reshuffle

Renee Slegers made five changes to the Arsenal side beaten 3-2 by Manchester City in the Women’s Super League on Saturday, but the shake-up failed to deliver the desired result.

Arsenal’s early intent was rewarded when Alessia Russo struck to give them the lead, yet a series of defensive lapses in playing out from the back saw their composure fade.

Lyon, eight-time winners of the competition, grew increasingly dominant once they went in front, forcing Arsenal to rely on long balls towards Russo in search of an equaliser.
