First-half goals from Sonny Carey and Reece Burke gave Nathan Jones’s side a commanding lead before Jamal Lowe’s strike 20 minutes from time set up a tense finale. Wednesday’s hopes of rescuing a point ended deep into stoppage time when goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was shown a red card for bringing down Tanto Olaofe.
The Addicks are now within a point of the play-off places ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Ipswich Town. Jones made just one change from the side that faced Preston North End before the international break, with Amari’i Bell replacing Kayne Ramsay.
Closer analysis of an important win for Charlton
Charlton looked lively from the outset and carved out the first chance inside eight minutes when Burke’s shot was deflected behind. The visitors responded through Lowe, who met a deep cross at the far post but his close-range header was comfortably saved by Thomas Kaminski.
The hosts then took control and deservedly broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Burke’s sliding challenge regained possession and Carey, continuing his run after linking with Tyreece Campbell, saw his initial effort saved by Horvath before firing the rebound high into the net.
Wednesday’s Gabriel Otegbayo prevented further damage with a superb recovery tackle on Charlie Kelman, but Charlton doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time. Carey won a free kick wide on the right, James Bree delivered a pinpoint cross, and Burke rose highest to nod home.

Carey remained at the heart of Charlton’s attacking play after the interval, forcing Horvath into another low save. Yet Wednesday were handed a lifeline when Sean Fusire’s long-range effort struck the post and ricocheted off Kaminski, allowing Lowe to tap in from close range.
Despite the late pressure, Charlton held firm to secure the points, with Horvath’s dismissal in the final moments capping a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.
