Ipswich, previously unbeaten at home, dominated the opening half but failed to make their pressure count. Ivan Azon saw his effort smothered by Thomas Kaminski, while Chuba Akpom rattled the crossbar.

Charlton, who have now won four of their past six matches, made them pay after the break. Sonny Carey opened the scoring with his fourth goal in seven games before Macaulay Gillesphey headed in a second. Ipswich, who have now lost back-to-back games and saw goalkeeper Alex Palmer limp off injured in the first half, were shaken, and substitute Miles Leaburn added a third soon after coming on

More analysis of a remarkable night.

It was a remarkable turnaround from a side that had shipped 14 goals in their previous three meetings with the Tractor Boys. For much of the first half, it looked as though this encounter would follow the same pattern.

Kaminski denied Azon, Greg Docherty cleared Jack Clarke’s inswinging corner off the line, and Akpom hit the bar after fine approach play from Azon. Palmer’s withdrawal, following what appeared to be a muscle problem, did little to change the flow, and Ipswich remained on top. Yet Charlton finished the half strongly, hinting at what was to come.

Isaac Olaofe, making his first league start, turned past Ashley Young and raced clear, only for substitute keeper Christian Walton to block with his feet. Moments later, Gillesphey fired over from close range after meeting James Bree’s dangerous corner.

Clarke continued to pose Ipswich’s biggest threat after the restart, but Kaminski pushed his shot over the bar and Akpom headed narrowly wide from another fine delivery.

Then came the turnaround. Carey pounced on Leif Davis’s headed clearance, cut inside Dara O’Shea and fired low past Walton to put Charlton ahead. The visitors pressed on, with Walton producing an excellent save to deny Charlie Kelman, before Carey's corner flicked off Olaofe and dropped kindly for Gillesphey to nod in the second.

Kasey McAteer thought he had given Ipswich a lifeline with a far-post header, only for the flag to rule it out. Charlton sealed the points when Conor Coventry kept a corner in play and found Tyreece Campbell, whose pinpoint cross was headed home by Leaburn.

George Hirst squandered Ipswich’s best late chance, and Charlton might have added a fourth as both Campbell and Leaburn went close.

The result lifted Charlton to fifth in the Championship table, a statement win for a side growing in confidence with every game.
