Football Review | West Ham 0 - 2 Brentford
Brentford claimed their first Premier League away win of the season.
This spoiled Nuno Espirito Santo’s first home match in charge of a struggling West Ham side.
The visitors, beaten in each of their opening three league games on the road, were comfortably the better team as goals from Igor Thiago and Mathias Jensen condemned the Hammers to another dispiriting defeat, leaving them 19th in the table.
Brentford took a deserved lead two minutes before the interval after West Ham failed to clear a long ball forward. Kevin Schade helped it into the path of Thiago, whose effort squeezed past Alphonse Areola despite the keeper getting a hand to it.
Thiago thought he had doubled the lead moments later, only for VAR to intervene. The goal was correctly ruled out for offside, with officials forced to revert to last season’s manual system of drawing lines after a worldwide technology outage disrupted the semi-automated offside software.

Boos rang around the London Stadium as West Ham left the pitch at half-time, prompting an angry Nuno to make three defensive changes during the break.
Brentford remained on top after the restart and should have added a second when Schade headed against the crossbar from close range.
The hosts offered little threat throughout, and their frustration deepened in stoppage time when substitute Jensen sealed the win, lashing into the roof of the net to confirm Brentford’s dominance.
More boos greeted the final whistle as West Ham’s fairly miserable night ended in defeat that re-emphasised the job that their new manager has on his hands.
West Ham fans respond to another defeat.
Tony: That was an appalling display from West Ham. There was no urgency anywhere on the pitch and the players looked completely drained. We need to take a hard look at ourselves and start again.
Jamie: One of the worst performances I’ve seen in years (and there have been a few). What exactly was Nuno’s plan tonight? No striker, full-backs on the wrong sides, a midfield with no presence. It looked like 11 strangers out there. No cohesion, no identity, no fight – utterly toothless.
Paul: I expected far more passion for the new manager’s first home game. Time for serious change. Seventeen-year-old Airidas Golambeckis looks the best young talent we’ve had since Declan Rice.
Brentford supporters delighted
Michael: Andrews quietly silencing the doubters. Young coach learning game by game, will be there for many years I feel. Well don't Bees.
Andy: Brentford looked much fitter than West Ham. The Hammers looked very lethargic.
Ashleigh: Only consolation for West Ham United tonight was the scoreline. Brentford should've been in double figures. Worst performance by a Premier League team I've seen in years. Brentford's Thiago looks some player. Brentford will be OK with the quality they've got throughout the squad.
