Issa Diop struck the winning spot kick in sudden death for a 5-4 shootout victory after goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte thwarted three Wycombe attempts.
Josh King drew the Premier League side level early in the second half, cancelling out a rapid opener from former Fulham forward Cauley Woodrow, yet neither team could find another breakthrough and the tie finished 1-1.
Woodrow, who departed Craven Cottage in 2019 after eight years with the club, fired a crisp low effort from 20 yards with fewer than four minutes played. Fulham responded by gradually settling into the contest and found their equaliser in the 48th minute, King turning in his first senior goal with a neat flick at the near post from a corner.
King and £34.6m summer recruit Kevin threatened after the interval, although Fulham’s five efforts on target seldom troubled Wycombe keeper Will Norris.
Onwards to penalties
The Cottagers converted their opening four penalties before Norris denied Ryan Sessegnon and Jonah Kusi Asare. Lecomte, who had already kept out Ewan Henderson, then stopped efforts from Fred Onyedinma and Donnell McNeilly, presenting Diop with the chance to finish the job.
Best fan reaction
Frank, a Fulham fan, told us: "It's hard to tell if that’s a confidence boosting result we needed, or adds to the worries of failing to beat a League One team. All that being said though, we're two rounds now from a final and the chance to win a major trophy."
Jamie is also starting to think ahead. He said: "Four more Premier League sides are going to be knocked out now. Hopefully the draw will be kind to us and we can start dreaming about walking down Wembley Way."
