Football fans are masters of excuses. We make them to friends and rivals when debating contentious decisions. We make them to defend our own players’ questionable actions, on and off the pitch. And, most often, we make them to ourselves when things start to go wrong.
That has been the case with Fulham lately.
The explanations come easily enough. There have been too many injuries. Marco Silva did not get the central midfielder he wanted in the summer. And when you look at some of the opponents we have faced, the results are perhaps not that surprising.
But Saturday’s flat defeat to Everton was harder to explain away. It left us with just one point separating the team from the relegation zone with nearly a third of the season gone.

We can no longer talk about the table “taking shape”.
Fulham are in a fight to avoid the drop, one that will only grow fiercer as the festive schedule looms. This is our lowest points total at this stage of a Premier League season since Silva took charge.
Another international break now offers a pause, but not a welcome one. These intervals are often blamed for halting momentum, yet for Silva it may be a rare chance to take stock and work out what has gone wrong.
The reasons are difficult to define. Aside from Saturday, the players have competed well in most matches. We played really well against Arsenal, for example.
Injuries have certainly taken a toll. Rodrigo Muniz’s return was cut short when he limped off less than 20 minutes after coming on. Whatever the issue, the solution must come quickly.
Ten of Fulham’s 11 points this season have come at Craven Cottage. We face high-flying Sunderland next, and despite the visitors’ form, three points are essential. No excuses this time.
