Alessia Russo struck twice to lift Arsenal to a valuable win over Real Madrid.
This eased the pressure that had begun to gather after a stuttering run of form.

The England forward rose to meet two second-half crosses, turning the contest on its head after Scotland midfielder Caroline Weir had given the visitors an early lead with a precise volley.
Renee Slegers’ side had gone three games without a win, including a 3-2 defeat away to Bayern Munich and domestic draws with Tottenham and Chelsea, a sequence that had placed their European prospects under strain.
This victory steadies their position with two league phase fixtures still to navigate. Clear openings were scarce beyond Russo’s brace, though Olivia Smith offered a persistent threat and forced Misa Rodriguez into several important stops, while Linda Caicedo and Naomie Feller kept Arsenal’s defence occupied throughout.
Arsenal weren't convincing but they go the job done
The champions had already endured a difficult start to the campaign, slipping eight points adrift of WSL leaders Manchester City at the weekend, and their response here carried a degree of urgency. Slegers reacted with four changes, handing Chloe Kelly a starting role and refreshing the attack. Kelly repaid that decision by delivering the cross for Russo’s first, while Smith’s return added energy and incision.
Beth Mead made an immediate impression after stepping off the bench, finding Russo from a corner as Arsenal finally imposed themselves on proceedings. It was far from a fluent display and the level that carried them to last season’s European crown remains elusive, but the 3,000 supporters who endured the biting cold at Meadow Park were at least given reason to cheer as Arsenal clung to an important win.
What's next for Arsenal?
Arsenal hope to get their league form back on track when they host Liverpool in North London on Saturday 6 December. Their next Champions League fixture is on Tuesday 9 September.
