AFC Wimbledon recovered their weekend thrashing at Peterborough

The Dons were well aware of what was required on a rather damp evening. Avoid defeat and progress. Ultimately, they did just that.

AFC Wimbledon took the lead inside the opening 15 minutes when Will Hackford raced on to a long ball and finished smartly after beating the opposition defence for pace.

Hackford almost doubled his tally soon after, arriving in the box to meet Steve Seddon’s low cross following neat play from Harry Maycock, but the forward was just unable to make contact.

The hosts responded with chances of their own. Jude Arthurs’ curling free-kick was well saved by Alex McDonnell, who was called into action again moments later to block a powerful strike from Brooklyn Ilunga. Their pressure told before the interval as a corner was headed back across goal for Iris Odutayo to bundle home from close range, sending the sides in level at half-time.

Wimbledon came close to restoring their advantage immediately after the restart when Danilo Orsi fired narrowly off target from close range. Shortly after, Jack Currie replaced Joe Lewis in defence, while McDonnell again impressed with a sharp stop to divert a deflected Kabamba effort wide with his outstretched leg.

Changes prove to be the difference

Manager Johnnie Jackson introduced Josh Browne and Aron Sasu for the final half-hour, and the move paid off when Browne nodded in an in-swinging cross from Kwaku Asiimwe to restore the lead.

Hackford, who had scored his fifth goal of the season, was then replaced by Alex Foyo as he made his return from injury.

It was a confident finish from Wimbledon, who managed the closing stages well to secure victory and progress to the knockout rounds of the EFL Trophy.
