Charlton climbed to fifth after a dramatic late victory over West Brom
Their victory here was sealed by a deflected strike deep into stoppage time.

Greg Docherty had the chance to put the hosts ahead before the break but saw his penalty saved by Josh Griffiths, and in a contest short on clear chances, the points looked set to be shared.
That was until Sonny Carey’s long-range effort took a wicked deflection off substitute Chris Mepham, wrong-footing Griffiths and sending The Valley into raptures in the sixth minute of added time.
The result was cruel on West Brom, who had looked the more assured side for much of the match and created enough to win. Yet Charlton, last season’s League One play-off winners, extended their strong run to just one defeat in ten matches and continued to turn The Valley into a fortress, with only one home loss in 24 outings across all competitions since last December.
West Brom will reflect on their missed chances, particularly in the first half when Isaac Price and Aston Villa loanee Samuel Iling-Junior both went close. Their approach play was neat and patient, but their final touch lacked conviction.
A closer analysis of how Charlton won this game
Charlton’s best opportunity came after Ousmane Diakite was penalised for handball under pressure from Miles Leaburn, only for Docherty’s tame penalty to be comfortably stopped by Griffiths diving to his left.
After the interval, both sides began to show more urgency. Price forced a sharp save from Thomas Kaminski soon after the restart, before Carey tested Griffiths with a fierce drive from distance moments later.

As the match edged towards a stalemate, Charlton won a late corner. When the ball was cleared to Carey on the edge of the box, the midfielder turned and struck, the deflection carrying it beyond Griffiths to secure a thrilling late win and spark jubilant scenes on the touchline.
While Ipswich’s rise from League One to the Premier League remains a remarkable benchmark, Charlton’s recent momentum suggests they are on a promising upward path of their own.
After the match, Charlton fan @addicks4ever posted on Twitter/X: "Feeling fine…got Charlton Athletic on my mind…Jones has got us playing ⚽️ the way we should oh yeah !!!"
