The right-back opened the scoring six minutes after the restart, heading home at the far post on his 98th appearance for the club since joining in 2023. Joao Pedro doubled the lead before Pedro Neto completed the victory late on.

Chelsea had struggled to break down a stubborn Wolves side in the first half, prompting boos from sections of the home crowd at the interval. Despite their dominance in possession, the hosts failed to carve out many clear openings before the break, with Wolves, led temporarily by academy coaches James Collins and Richard Walker, failing to muster a single shot.

Alejandro Garnacho and Enzo Fernandez both tested the Wolves goalkeeper before the interval, while Joao Pedro came close with a dragged effort just wide.

The second half

After the restart, Gusto broke the deadlock from Garnacho’s cross, and substitute Estevao Willian made an immediate impact by setting up his compatriot Joao Pedro for Chelsea’s second less than two minutes after coming on. Garnacho then launched a swift counter-attack and provided another assist for Neto to wrap up the points.

It was an impressive performance from Garnacho, who joined Chelsea from Manchester United for £40 million in the summer and registered two assists in a Premier League match for the first time in his career.

Wolves offered little in response, with only long-range efforts from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and substitute Marshall Munetsi troubling Chelsea after they fell two goals behind.

The result lifts Chelsea to 20 points from 11 matches, while Wolves remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just two points.

Best fan reaction

After the match, we spoke to a number of fans who all had mixed views around the performance, despite the relatively comfortable victory.

Marcus: Still not sharp enough when facing sides that sit deep. Estevao Willian is a constant threat and must start regularly. Enzo Maresca needs to settle on a core line-up and make only a few changes each match rather than half the team.

Terri: In the first half, I couldn’t believe how we failed to score and that was worrying. But thankfully for the Blues, we managed to get the win.

Leigh: A typical display from this Chelsea side. They played properly for just one half against a team destined for relegation and eventually found a way through. Three points in the bag, but it only papers over the cracks.

Jamie: A bit sluggish in the first half, but much improved after the break. Great for Joao Pedro to get his goal and the international break comes at a good time for players recovering from knocks. The clean sheet was a welcome bonus too.
