Eberechi Eze proved Tottenham Hotspur’s nemesis once more as Arsenal delivered a clear statement in the title race, re-establishing a five-point lead at the summit of the Premier League with victory in the north London derby.

There was added pressure on the Gunners after surrendering a two-goal advantage at Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek, while Manchester City had narrowed the gap with a win over Newcastle United on Saturday night.

Tottenham Hotspur hoped to intensify the scrutiny in the first match under interim manager Igor Tudor, but Arsenal’s superiority in quality and intent was evident throughout against their out-of-sorts rivals.

The empty seats after Arsenal’s fourth goal told their own story. Spurs are in trouble.

How Arsenal eventually cruised to victory

Eze, who scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 derby win in November, again led the charge with goals either side of the interval. The England international, who came close to joining Spurs before Arsenal secured a £60m move from Crystal Palace in August, opened the scoring from close range after 32 minutes.

Randal Kolo Muani briefly lifted Spurs with a fine solo equaliser two minutes later, but Arsenal responded just after half-time as the much-criticised Viktor Gyokeres restored the lead with a crisp right-footed finish from 20 yards.

Unlike their costly retreat at Wolves, Mikel Arteta’s side continued to apply pressure. The third arrived on 61 minutes when Eze seized on a loose ball in the area and swept past Guglielmo Vicario.

Spurs had no response as Arsenal remained in command. Gyokeres outmuscled Archie Gray to add his second deep into stoppage time, completing an emphatic derby success.
