Brad Potts had given the hosts the lead a minute after the interval on his 250th appearance for North End.

Rangers recovered a point with eight minutes remaining when Preston substitute Thierry Small turned the ball into his own net.

The draw leaves Julien Stephan’s side 12th, seven points adrift of the top six with five games to play. Rivals Wrexham in sixth and seventh-placed Southampton both have matches in hand.

A run of three straight victories had revived QPR’s unlikely play-off ambitions, but they were blunted by a subdued first half.

Preston edged the opening period

The home side's Alfie Devine saw a 25-yard effort deflected narrowly wide before setting up Ben Whiteman, who dragged his shot over.

Devine was again influential as North End went ahead shortly after the restart. His pass into the right side of the area found Potts, who drilled a low finish across goal into the bottom corner.

It appeared enough to secure the points until Small attempted to clear inside his own box and instead sliced the ball over Daniel Iversen and into the net.

Iversen then preserved a share of the spoils, tipping Daniel Bennie’s header over the bar before producing an even finer save from the same player in the final minute of stoppage time.
