Football Fan View | How can Spurs avoid another relegation battle?
Another strange season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Greg S reflects on a 'successful' battle to avoid relegation and how they need to improve before next season.
What was the best moment and why?
The best moment from an atrocious season was the sense of community among the fanbase. Supporters continued to turn up in their thousands, even when it often felt as though the players did not. They cheered, waved flags, lit flares and sang throughout, despite the abject failure on the pitch. There were boos as well, but somebody had to hold the club to account and the fans made sure that happened.
Who was the player of the season and why?
There should also be honourable mentions for Archie Gray and Antonin Kinsky, but the player of the season has to be Joao Palhinha. It is not always easy for a loan signing to make a positive impression, yet the Portugal international showed quiet leadership to enormous effect. Spurs owe him plenty and there will be hope that the move becomes permanent.
Who was the unsung hero and why?
It is difficult to describe him as an unsung hero because the supporters sing about him constantly, but Kevin Danso remains an underrated player. With the captain sidelined for various reasons, Danso stepped up impressively and proved to be the understudy who outshone the lead.
What was the biggest disappointment?
The biggest disappointment was Randal Kolo Muani by some distance. He arrived with the expectation of scoring goals but failed to deliver anywhere near enough, while offering little else to make up for the lack of end product. It felt like a wasted opportunity for everybody involved.
When were you starting to fear that relegation might be possible?
There was a 3-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace. We played decent in parts but the defence looked like they were going to concede a goal everytime Palace attacked.
What was the highlight of the season?
Aside from some of the Champions League matches, the win at Aston Villa was a great performance and gave us the confidence to stay up.
What needs to change this summer?
Everything needs to change this summer. Spurs cannot continue finishing 17th. A full-scale review of the club is required, including serious scrutiny of the board and its woeful decision-making, along with a particular focus on the medical department. Certain players should be sold or sent back to their parent clubs, including Cristian Romero, Kolo Muani, Richarlison and Yves Bissouma. At the very least, Spurs need to sign a prolific goalscorer and bring Luka Vuskovic back into the fold. James Maddison should also be handed the captaincy.
What is the major hope for next season?
The major hope for next season is that the players stay fit and the club can finally begin building something positive for the future.
