The hosts almost made the perfect start inside two minutes when Mo Belloumi drifted in from the left and struck a fierce effort from a tight angle that clipped the outside of the near post.

Millwall threatened in response as Camiel Neghli's drive from distance flashed narrowly wide, while the contest opened up in the final 20 minutes. Oli McBurnie came close for Hull but could not make clean contact with Yu Hirakawa's inviting cross.

Femi Azeez forced a save from Hull goalkeeper Ivor Pandur after cutting in from the right, and Ryan Leonard thought he had snatched a late winner for the visitors only for his effort to be ruled out after Tristan Crama was adjudged to have fouled Charlie Hughes in the build-up.

The sides will meet again at The Den on Monday for the second leg.

The Millwall manager said his side approached the match with the intention of winning rather than simply avoiding defeat and praised his players for coping well despite many lacking experience in high-pressure play-off fixtures.

Neil also acknowledged the challenge awaiting at The Den, describing Hull City as dangerous on the counter-attack, while adding that he enjoyed the atmosphere generated by the occasion.
