Exeter City’s 2-1 defeat to Bradford City confirmed the Grecians’ relegation, ensuring Orient’s survival regardless, though they still claimed a point of their own
Closer analysis of what as a fascinating final day match
There was a sharpness to the hosts’ start. Inside two minutes, a corner delivered by Charlie Wellens caused chaos in the area, with captain Will Forrester forcing the ball over the line from close range.
Burton responded with intent and were twice denied by Will Dennis, who produced an excellent stop from Fabio Tavares at point-blank range before reacting well again to keep out a long-range effort from JJ McKiernan.
Orient’s control wavered as the half wore on. Demetri Mitchell missed a presentable chance and moments later Burton drew level, Tavares reacting quickest after Dennis could only parry.
The home side restored their advantage shortly after the break. Dom Ballard found space in the area and drove a low finish beyond Bradley Collins, reasserting Orient’s grip on proceedings.
That advantage proved short-lived. Burton equalised again before the hour, Alex Hartridge turning in from close range following a set-piece.
With confirmation filtering through from the West Country, the closing stages carried a sense of acceptance. The point was enough on the day, and survival, already assured elsewhere, was greeted with relief rather than celebration.
