Football Transfer News | Chelsea agree record deal for Rogers

Chelsea have agreed a club record £117m deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old is set to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the option of a further 12 months.

Rogers is due to undergo a medical on Monday after returning from England duty at the 2026 World Cup.

The transfer would make him the most expensive English player in history, surpassing the £116m Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for fellow England midfielder Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

He will also become Chelsea's record signing, overtaking the £107m the club paid for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

The move is another significant step in new head coach Xabi Alonso's rebuild ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Rogers, who came through Manchester City's academy, joined Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal initially worth £8m, with the fee rising to £15m through add-ons.

A sell-on clause entitles Middlesbrough to 20% of the profit Villa make on any future sale, meaning the Championship club are set to receive at least £20.4m from the transfer, with the final figure dependent on any activated add-ons.

Middlesbrough believe it represents the largest sell-on fee ever received by an English club.

Rogers scored 21 league goals in 85 appearances under Unai Emery and helped Villa lift the Europa League last season.

He has won 21 senior England caps, scoring once, and featured in six matches during this summer's World Cup.
