The Saints took the lead after 10 minutes when Leo Scienza slipped a low shot into the bottom corner from just outside the area.

But the Hammers levelled shortly before half-time as Joshua Ajala headed home from a corner after Saints goalkeeper Daniel Peretz misjudged the flight of the ball.

Ajala struck again early in the second half, finding the net with a right-footed effort inside the box before substitute Valentin Castellanos added a third with 15 minutes remaining.

Jarrod Bowen completed the scoring late on, cutting inside on his left foot before curling a fine effort into the far corner.

A closer look at what happened

Southampton took the lead in front of a reduced-capacity crowd at St Mary's, with Tonda Eckert naming a strong side against a heavily rotated West Ham team.

Scienza collected the ball at the top of the box and was forced towards the right by the West Ham defence, but managed to send a low effort back across goal and into the bottom-left corner.

The Hammers drew level just before the interval when Lewis Orford delivered a corner that Peretz failed to judge, allowing Ajala to head into an empty net at the back post.

West Ham then moved ahead early in the second half. Jack Stephens only half-cleared the ball, sending it straight to Ajala, who recovered after taking a heavy touch before firing into the net.

Castellanos added a third in the 75th minute after Joel Veltman burst into space down the right and pulled the ball back for the forward to finish, before he ran off to celebrate with the delighted away support.

Bowen rounded off the scoring, underlining his quality late on as he cut in from the right and curled a superb effort into the far corner.
