Addicks captain Lloyd Jones, who headed the equaliser in Charlton's comeback win over Derby County on the opening day last Saturday, put the visitors ahead early on with an overhead kick after West Ham failed to deal with Sonny Carey's long throw, allowing the ball to bounce inside their penalty area.
Seven days after securing victory against the Rams, Tyreece Campbell was clinical once again. He dispossessed the hesitant Konstantinos Mavropanos before cutting into the box and curling a fine finish beyond the goalkeeper shortly after half-time to double Charlton's advantage in front of a sell-out crowd of 62,500, including more than 3,000 jubilant away supporters.
West Ham dominated possession thereafter and pulled one back through debutant Joel Piroe's close-range finish. They were handed a chance to rescue a point deep into added time when Conor Coventry was judged to have handled the ball, but Castellanos sent his penalty wide.
Best West Ham fan comments
Jon: Woeful. Too slow, too many misplaced passes, mistakes and half-taken chances. Someone needs to take charge, both on and off the pitch, before this season gets away from us. As a long-time supporter, I am embarrassed.
Karl: There is so much to put right, and with the stadium sold out, the fan base is clearly behind the team. It is about time the club produced a performance to match that support. There was no passion whatsoever.
Bobby: Based on what I have seen in the first two games, I cannot see any way the Hammers will be promoted. I expected us to be better than this, but it feels like the same painful experience we endured last season.
