With Chelsea out of Europe and subdued after their weekend defeat by Tottenham, this competition represented a genuine opportunity for Alonso to win a major trophy, a fact reflected in his team selection.

His side made a slow start at Anfield but, having taken the lead, Alonso will be disappointed that their advantage lasted only three minutes.

Chelsea continued to compete well and posed a threat, but the defeat will sting, particularly given the golden opportunity they squandered to win the tie when Dutch striker Emegha saw his effort saved.

Alonso said his side had improved on their performance against Spurs and played with courage. He was right, but ultimately this was another defeat.

Much has been written about the friendship between Spaniards Alonso and Iraola and, although the new season is only three months old, it is already clear that Iraola has made the better start. He will head into November having lost just once in all competitions.

Best fan reaction

Terry: Very poor again. We had a much stronger starting XI but lacked quality for the full 90 minutes. Welbeck deserves respect but, as we have already seen this season, he is no longer a 90-minute player. It says everything about the club's leadership that we still believe our squad is complete with just one recognised striker. Another season of mediocrity.

Kris: Once again, I am left wondering how we ever paid Leicester £75m for Wesley Fofana. Another disastrous performance from the French international. No wonder he cannot get a game in the Premier League after that showing.

Jamie: Disappointing, as this was a good opportunity to win a trophy. The wider issue, of course, is having a large squad to keep happy when we have only league fixtures until the new year. On a positive note, I feel this Chelsea team could still have a decent season.
