The incident that resulted in Dowman's red card

The 16-year-old midfielder was shown a straight red card in the 85th minute after reacting to a heavy challenge by Fleetwood's Harrison Neal.

Although Dowman did not fully kick out, his foot did make contact with Neal.

The game finished 1-1 before League Two Fleetwood beat the Premier League champions 5-3 on penalties.

Arsenal appealed Dowman's sending-off on Wednesday.

It was Dowman's second red card this month. He had also been sent off while representing England's Under-19s.

Opinion of an Arsenal fan | Downman unlucky

I thought Max Dowman was a little unlucky. He'll have been sitting on the coach on the way to the airport feeling disappointed after the game.

But he's got to get back into training, work hard and wait for his next opportunity.

He'll learn from the experience. Being a footballer is a rollercoaster, with highs and lows, and this is one of his lows.

Mikel Arteta has his standards. He'll also have a word with him behind closed doors, put his arm around him and explain that he needs to be careful in these situations because there will be opponents looking to kick him.

He's got to get used to that because he's going to be a real talent in the future. I'm sure he'll be fine under Mikel. Arteta was a young player himself, so he probably understands how to handle these situations.
