Last year's champions capitalised on Manchester City's defeat by Brighton to edge a thrilling contest at Liverpool and move three points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Back-to-back defeats for City had handed the Gunners an opportunity to take control of the title race, but they faced a stern test against a Liverpool side showing signs of rapid improvement.
Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 16th minute
Declan Rice's ball across the face of goal was turned in at the back post by Kai Havertz.
The visitors were then forced to withstand wave after wave of Liverpool attacks for the remainder of the first half as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.
David Raya just managed to reach Virgil van Dijk's flick-on before Alexander Isak could pounce, while Liverpool had two penalty appeals dismissed. Florian Wirtz then came close to levelling when his free-kick crashed against the crossbar.
Liverpool continued to dominate in the early stages of the second half
Arsenal had tightened up defensively and offered the hosts very few opportunities to exploit.
The introduction of Myles Lewis-Skelly helped the Gunners regain some momentum in the closing stages. Only an outstanding one-handed save from Alisson denied Christos Tzolis a second goal after his excellent first-time effort was directed towards the far corner.
In the end, Havertz's early strike proved decisive as Arsenal claimed all three points and celebrated their first Premier League victory at Liverpool since 2012.
