Gig Review: The Bug Club

Image
The Bug Club once again delivered a high-energy performance show. A fantastic night of music at the Electric Ballroom back in February Author - Josh D How was the support act? Opening for one of the sharpest bands on the circuit right now is no easy task, but Holiday Ghosts rises to the challenge with ease. From my vantage point in the thickening crowd at the Electric Ballroom, they seem almost disarmingly young for a group so self-assured.  Their set is anchored by the impressively steady drumming and vocals of Kate Raskin, while Sam Stacpoole’s sumptuous guitar work, alongside his own vocal contributions, adds further depth. With snappy songs and infectious hooks, they displayed serious raw talent. More music stories and gig reviews from London Super News The main event The last time I caught The Bug Club, in front of a smaller London crowd, they left me stunned. They still look like they’re having the time of their lives, and if anything, their connection with the audience h...

Another defeat for QPR as they remain 14th in the Championship First-half goals from Tommy Conway and Anfernee Dijksteel had put Boro in control. A late strike from Steve Cook ensured a nervy finish, with QPR pushing hard for an equaliser in stoppage time. Author - Lucy W The few hundred QPR fans that travelled up to Middlesbrough For Marti Cifuentes' QPR, who slip to 15th, this was a seventh defeat in nine, a worrying slump as they head into the season’s final stretch. The win lifts Michael Carrick’s side back to eighth, just three points behind Coventry in the final play-off spot.  Boro had endured a dire run earlier in the year, losing five in a row from late January into February, but looked to have turned a corner with back-to-back victories before their defeat at Swansea. That made Conway’s 11th-minute opener all the more significant, the striker turning in Finn Azaz’s low cross from the byline to spark a huge sigh of relief around the Riverside. Boro could have doub...

Football: Chelsea 1 - 0 Leicester City

An important win for Chelsea as they aim to secure Champions League qualification  Chelsea climbed back into the Premier League’s top four with a hard-fought win over Leicester City at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of a second-half strike from Marc Cucurella. Author - Lauren W The Spanish left-back netted his fifth goal of the season, and his second in as many league games, after finding the net after scoring against Southampton last time out. His decisive moment came on the hour mark, when he unleashed a left-footed effort from 25 yards that flew past Leicester keeper Mads Hermansen. Source | Chelsea Football Club YouTube   Before that, Chelsea had struggled to break through. They squandered a golden opportunity midway through the first half when Cole Palmer saw his penalty saved by Hermansen, after Jadon Sancho was tripped in the box by Victor Kristiansen. It was Palmer’s first failure from the spot after converting all 12 of his previous penalties, extending his run without...

Gig Review: Jack White

Image
Jack White performed his 2024 solo album No Name in a barnstorming gig.  The former White Stripe frontman is still the real deal. Author - Josh D Dressed all in black and leather with a mop of jet black curls, he looked his early White Stripes more than he has in a long while.  White lets the music speak for itself for much of the night, powering through his own back catalogue alongside covers of The Stooges and blues legend Robert Johnson. He weaves in eight White Stripes tracks and two from The Raconteurs, whose drummer, Patrick Keeler, is part of his current band. There’s even a moment for his supergroup, The Dead Weather, featuring a back-and-forth between White and keyboardist Bobby Emmett—along with one of those slightly awkward exchanges in the pit. Source | Automorph YouTube account "I Cut Like a Buffalo" slinks along with a raw, stripped-back groove, driven by the Hammond organ and punctuated by syncopated, delay-drenched guitars. White’s guttural, choking vocal ...

Football: Barnet 1 - 0 Dagenham and Redbridge

Another important win for Barnet as they bid to return to the English Football League  Lee Ndlovu struck deep into stoppage time to hand National League leaders Barnet a dramatic victory over Dagenham and Redbridge. Author - Lucy W The Bees notched their 25th league win of the campaign, extending their lead at the top to 12 points ahead of York's clash with third-placed Forest Green later on Saturday. Ndlovu’s decisive moment came in the third minute of added time, his low strike finally breaching the resistance of Dagenham goalkeeper Louis Jones, who had produced a string of fine saves throughout the match. About London Super News Jones had kept the visitors in contention with several outstanding stops, frustrating Barnet for much of the game. Callum Stead came close on multiple occasions, but the breakthrough remained elusive until Ndlovu's late intervention. The defeat was a cruel blow for Dagenham, who looked set to claim a valuable point in their fight against relega...

Watkins sinks former club as Villa boost top-four hopes Ollie Watkins was the difference as Aston Villa edged past his former side Brentford to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Author - James P Watkins’ deflected strike early in the second half sealed a 1-0 win, lifting Unai Emery’s side to seventh in the table and within two points of fourth-placed Manchester City, albeit having played a game more. In a match short on clear-cut chances, Watkins sparked the contest into life after 49 minutes. Latching onto Jacob Ramsey’s through ball, the England striker cut inside and drilled a low shot that clipped Nathan Collins before creeping past Mark Flekken. Click here for more Premier League news from European Super Football Watkins thought he had turned provider moments later, squaring for Morgan Rogers to find the net, but a VAR check ruled the Villa forward marginally offside. Brentford almost snatched an equaliser when Keane Lewis-Potter struck the foot of the post, but Vill...
