Charlton Athletic concluded their League One campaign with a 3-1 win against Burton Albion at The Valley, securing fourth place and setting up a play-off semi-final clash with Wycombe Wanderers.

Matty Godden scored twice before Alex Mitchell added a third in the second half, extending the Addicks’ unbeaten home run to 15 matches under Nathan Jones.

A closer analysis of the match

The visitors struck first through Mason Bennett, who converted a penalty after Ashley Maynard-Brewer was adjudged to have brought down Fabio Tavares. The Addicks goalkeeper had been booked for the foul, which followed a misplaced back pass from Mitchell.

Mitchell, however, responded quickly. His recovery tackle in midfield allowed Charlton to build down the right flank, where Tennai Watson’s incisive first-time ball sent Godden clear. The striker took the ball past Max Crocombe and finished smartly from a tight angle to level the scores.

Godden struck again shortly after, expertly controlling a long pass from Josh Edwards before turning away from his marker and finishing low with his left foot. It was his 21st goal of the season and another reminder of his value to the side.

Burton responded after the interval, with substitute Charlie Webster forcing a fingertip save from Maynard-Brewer via a well-struck free kick.

Charlton regained their rhythm and made it 3-1 six minutes into the second half. A corner was only partially cleared, and Conor Coventry did well to work space on the left before delivering an inviting cross. Mitchell rose highest in the area to head home from close range.

The hosts continued to threaten. Alex Gilbert came close following a long throw, while Crocombe was called into action again to deny Macaulay Gillesphey’s header.

There was also a proud moment for the club’s academy. Ibrahim Fullah made his senior debut and nearly scored within minutes, curling a fine effort onto the bar. It was Valley Gold and Academy Day, and Fullah’s introduction, along with fellow graduate Kai Enslin, meant six academy products featured for Charlton.

It was a fitting end to the regular season, with The Valley in buoyant mood and the play-offs now firmly in focus.
