Responding to the Everton defeat

Vick: We dominated almost the entire first half, yet only had a single goal to show for it. The football was as fluent and confident as the travelling support could have hoped for after Thursday’s win over Dynamo Kiev. Unfortunately, once again, missed chances proved costly, allowing Everton to mount a spirited comeback. By the final whistle, it felt like one game too many as we began to fade.

Alex: Three points gone begging. The first half was full of missed opportunities, and it became a familiar pattern. Disappointing from Jean-Philippe Mateta, who continues to struggle in front of goal. Maybe this will serve as a timely reminder for the team. The one positive is that we still sit in the top six.

David: Echoing previous sentiments, Palace were largely impressive, but a costly error and some poor officiating did us no favours. The number of times Adam Wharton was harshly penalised bordered on the absurd.

Patrick: Picking up from there, it was a bright start and strong first half, but Everton’s physicality told after the break. Mateta should have buried that sitter, and from there you could sense what was coming. Everton really are a bogey side for us. Had almost forgotten what losing felt like since April.

The general mood about how the season has started

Vick: How can we complain? We’ve won another trophy with the Community Shield, are on course for progression in the Conference League, and have only lost once in the Premier League.

David: We didn’t have the best transfer window, but it has been a fantastic start to the season. Onwards and upwards.

Patrick: We have never had it so good. The FA Cup and Community Shield gleam in the trophy cabinet. There have also been some great wins in European competition.

Hopes for the rest of the season

Vick: Maintaining this level of performance would be amazing. I’d love to see us finish in the top 10 and maybe win a trophy. Is that asking too much?

Alex: European qualification again would be massive for us. If we can achieve that, winning one of the three trophies, that would be a bonus for us.
