Football Review | Millwall 0 - 4 Coventry City

Millwall were comfortably beaten by Coventry City.

Haji Wright's double, plus Ellis Simms and Kaine Kesler-Hayden's second-half goals were enough to condemn The Lions to defeat.

Alex Neil recalled Billy Mitchell, Luke Cundle and Mihailo Ivanovic to the starting XI, with Wes Harding also handed a place at right-back. Femi Azeez returned to the bench.

Millwall started with promise. Joe Bryan dispossessed his man early on and set Mitchell away, the midfielder finding Camiel Neghli, but his cross was gathered comfortably by Carl Rushworth. At the other end, Brandon Thomas-Asante went close when he bundled a corner wide.

Aidomo Emakhu’s pace troubled Coventry down the left, though a promising move came to nothing when Harding opted to pull the ball back rather than shoot. Moments later, Viktor Torp powered his way through midfield but fired wide after seeing his first effort blocked.

The breakthrough came on 29 minutes. A defensive lapse allowed Thomas-Asante to steal possession and square for Wright, who had the simplest of finishes to put Coventry ahead.

Millwall created half-chances through Mitchell and Neghli before the interval but went in trailing by a goal.

After the restart, Emakhu’s dangerous cross flashed across the face of goal with no one there to convert. Neghli also threatened with a weaving run before his shot was deflected behind, while Azeez’s introduction just after the hour injected fresh energy.

The away side were ruthless

On 66 minutes Wright rose unmarked to head in his second from a pinpoint cross, doubling the visitors’ lead.

Millwall pressed, with Azeez curling over and Ivanovic firing high after a driving run from Mitchell, but their resistance crumbled in the closing stages. Simms made it 3-0 with a close-range header on 82 minutes, before Kesler-Hayden added a fourth late on to complete the rout.

Rushworth denied Neghli with a fingertip save onto the post, ensuring Millwall finished the night without reward.

The away side were outstanding here and former West Ham and Chelsea player Frank Lampard will have been delighted with this performance. For the home, the nature of defeat will be concerning to everyone associated with the club.
